President Dwight Eisenhower's chief of staff, Sherman Adams, was forced to resign in 1958 amid accusations that he interceded with federal regulatory agencies in behalf of Bernard Goldfine, a Boston industrialist who had given Adams an oriental rug, a vicua coat, and other gifts. Adams, a former governor of New Hampshire, already was unpopular with his fellow Republicans for tightly restricting access to the president. When questioned by a House committee about Goldfine, Adams refused to answer and was convicted later of contempt of Congress, contempt of court, and tax evasion. more... |
